Meritocracy is Unfair?

Sometimes, what we think and feel can be weirder than that of what we see and hear.

Meritocracy is Unfair?

Post by Roger »

What in the world is going on with people? I mean, other than the obvious.

The American Psychological Association just released a report stating that merit-based hiring is unfair. Huh? Since when?

As indicated by these excerpts, and according to the study,
Fairness heuristic theory suggests that, as long as people consider selection processes such as hiring and promotion to be meritocratic and fair, they may continue to accept ever-increasing levels of income inequality. Yet, in reality, inequality and merit-based decisions are deeply intertwined.

Socioeconomic advantages and disadvantages early in life can have profound influences on educational achievement, test scores, work experiences, and other qualifications that form the basis of ‘meritocratic’ selection processes. Yet the near-universal support for meritocracy suggests that most people may not give much weight to unequal advantages and disadvantages.

In our work, we show that it does not take much for people to update their fairness perceptions of meritocracy and be more supportive of polices that foster social class diversity in organizations.

In other words, because someone is socioeconomically disadvantaged, and thus probably not qualified for the position they are applying for, hiring managers should hire them anyway to foster equal opportunity in the workplace. Americans have enough trouble with corporations screwing them over by intent, why do we need to exacerbate the problem of corporate ineptness, too? In my admittedly uneducated perception, why do we create a false basis for problems that plague society, while we skirt the real causes? Is it that people have become accustomed to individual entitlement? Thus, little victories become more important than major societal accomplishments?

This is by the same organization that came under fire for proposing what some people considered to be biased conclusions. In 2019, the organization claimed that "traditional masculinity" could be mentally damaging.

"The main thrust of the subsequent research is that traditional masculinity – marked by stoicism, competitiveness, dominance and aggression – is, on the whole, harmful," the APA claimed in a press release.

I don't mean to pound a soap box here, but perhaps we need to get back to basics instead of branching off into fantasy. I don't know, it's just a guess from one of the mass of billions of the unwashed and ignorant.
